Miss Kat’s Dragon Tutorial part 1, anatomy, how to draw

Hey there, so a cool guy at work wanted me to do a tutorial for his daughter since she is really into dragons and loves to draw them. Well this turned out SO WELL that I decided to youtube it. No rehearsals, just straight messing around drawing on a whiteboard. I had to crop it to three parts. I usually spend lots of time on scales and stuff, this is mostly just structure reference and skeletal Anatomy etc. Enjoy!

The artists I mentioned were Larry Elmore, Jeff Easley and Ed Emberley as inspirations.

Anatomy of the Arm and Forearm ( Front View )

Been studying Anatomy a lot lately, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the forearm… Been looking at tons of different sources trying to figure out how it all fits together, and I think I finally have a somewhat okay, although not perfect, understanding… And so I thought it might be good to share whatever small knowledge I may have gained with everyone incase there’s someone like me out there who’s really struggling to learn anatomy. This isn’t an entertainment video or really for beginners. I would suggest beginners learn how to make the arm out of cylinders and stuff and get the basic proportions down. I still probably messed some stuff up, but hopefully not too much. Of course, this is only one view, and I didn’t draw all the movements etc, but really that would be an hour long video… Not much time right now, but maybe in a couple months I’ll be able to handle something like that.
Anyway, I’m not really liking my drawing… I think the proportions are quite badly done. Gonna try to do better next time. I think the muscles are generally in the right place though. if they’re not, let me know cuz I’m still learning.

The books I’ve been using for anatomy are:
Gottfried Bammes – Der nackte Mensch
George Bridgman – Complete Guide to Drawing From Life
Andrew Loomis – Figure Drawing for All it’s Worth
Burne Hogarth – Dynamic Anatomy
Famous Artists Course

All the books are good in their own way. I really like the book by Bammes, but unfortunately it’s only in German… Still, good images in there.

Used SketchBookPro to draw in this time. I like to use it because of the interface. Real easy to use with a tablet. I don’t think it’s superior to Photoshop in what it can do, but it’s just very user friendly and easy. Don’t have to worry about adjusting brush settings etc…

Tools:
Wacom Intuos3 12×9
Autodesk SketchBookPro 2009
Camtasia Studio
FL Studio 9

Music: All the music was crap I composed. Sorry if it sucks, lol. Hopefully I’ll get better if I keep at it. If it’s too bad, there’s always the mute button. ;)
